How about getting to the next step in my career?

Getting to the next step involves identifying goals, clarifying the requirements and making plans. It applies to careers at work, in sports and life in general. Do you know what you want to achieve next? Do you have an end goal in mind? How clear is that picture for you?

Identifying your next step(s) and creating a plan towards your (end)goal can be difficult. The below exercise might help you with that. It is (a shorter version) of one of the tools from my coaching toolkit to help you get where you want to go. It is a combination of 'visualisation' (positive psychology) with 'performance profiling' (sports), and is based on positive expectations rather than a fantasy.

Focus on positive mental images including how you will achieve the desired outcome.

Have fun!

1. Visualise what you want to achieve. What does it look like? What are its characteristics? Describe this goal in detail.

2. Travel forward into the future, 1 week…. 2 weeks… up until 1 month from now.

You are working on getting towards your goal. What have you done? What actions and decisions have you made? How does it feel thus far up the road?

3. Travel further forward into the future. And you are getting closer and closer towards your goal. How does it feel? What happens inside you when you notice the difference you make and the benefits of your work?

4. Travel forward once more, a year from now. Here you have accomplished your goal. Where are you? And what have you done? What are people saying? How does it feel to have achieved your goal?

5. Coming back to the present and looking back on your process of reaching your goal. What have you done to achieve it? Did you make changes at work? In your private life? What were the things that helped you along the way?

6. Note down all things that come to mind from step 5. What have you learned? Can you rate each characteristic you’ve discovered? These insights can help you to succeed in your goal.

I hope you enjoyed the exercise and that it is helpful to you.
